History of Newspapers In India
A newspaper is a publication that is regularly printed and distributed on a regular basis, consisting of interesting supplementary text, mainly news, Headlines, Opinions of the people, etc. Printing newspapers started after the arrival of the British in India. Newspapers became a means of broadcast information and knowledge. Newspapers cover a wide range of local and international news. In Egypt, inscriptions of government decrees in form of Carved articles were kept in public places. In the ancient Roman Empire, government decrees were written on a piece of paper and distributed among the provinces.
- Bengal Gazette: India’s first English language newspaper launched on 29 January 1780. It is known as the Calcutta General Advisor or the Bengal Gazette. It was started by an Irish man named James Augustus Hickey.
- Darpan: Darpan is a newspaper started in Mumbai in 1832. Balshastri Jambhekar was the editor of Darpan. From the news of Darpan you can find the political, economic, social and cultural history. It was the first Marathi newspaper. January 6 is Balshastri Jamkhedkar’s birthday celebrated in Maharashtra as Journalist’s Day.
- Prabhakar : this newspaper was started by Bhau Mahajan in which the history of French rebellion and the social awakening of democratic interests were published.
- Kesari and Maratha : Kesari and Maratha newspapers marked an important milestone in the history of pre-independence Indian newspapers
The newspapers were started in 1981 by Gopal Ganesh Agarkar and Bal Gangadhar Tilak. These papers explored social and political issues.

- In the pre-independence period, in 1924, a private radio station called Indian Broadcasting Company started broadcasting daily programs.
- The British government later renamed the company as Indian State Broadcasting (ISB).
- In 1936, the company was renamed as All India Radio (AIR).
- After India became independent, All India Radio became part of the Information and Broadcasting Department of the Government of India.
- The name All India Radio was given on the suggestion of poet Pandit Narendra Sharma.
- All India Radio presents various entertainment and enlightenment programs with literary value.
History of Television In India
Doordarshan
- On 15 September 1959, the first President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, inaugurated the Delhi Doordarshan Kendra.
- Doordarshan’s Mumbai Kendra program started on 1st May 1972 in Maharashtra.
- Color television arrived on August 15, 1982.
